Rita Kelly Miller.
With me in studio now.
Welcome, Rita.
Thanks to have you here.
I love how you brought eac member of your family into this.
Just through your acting, in your writing.
What inspired you to do this play?
Well, maybe it's genetic but the Irish tradition of the Shannon Key storytelling is something that is near and dear to my heart.
And I learned so much.
and I was the keeper of all of our family stories.
And I thought how can I honor my mom and dad and also help other caregivers based on my experiences?
So I started doing storytelling, which led to lots of other things.
And ultimately, here we are.
How long did it take you to create this?
I mean, you had to condense several lines here.
I decided to take you to create it.
it was about a year.
I had been doing storytelling for years, and, I was inspired by a collaborator to do a one woman show, and I didn't know what I didn't know.
So I spent a lot of time just assembling the stories and thinking about what?
What's the path?
What is the through line?
How can I help people through the power of story, to have an appreciation of their own heritage?
Perhaps.
And then also ways to inspire caregiver when it's such a difficult road.
Did you have a background i writing, you know, for dialog?
No, no, not at all.
That was what was so hard because it's it's dialog, but it's not because it's just me.
So I'm often talking to myself.
so it was a learning process, and I had great mentors and ten revisions before the show is, well, actually 11, before the show is, as you're seeing it here now.
Well, that kind of creativity, we believe Detroit, the PBS needs to be foster and there's needs to be a place where it can be shared with everybody.
And that's why we're so prou to have this television station and to open it up to creative people like you.
