I don't mean that to sound corny, but that's where things happen out here is in the gathering places.
You're basically family when you live in a small community, [truck passing] [grill top frying] My dad could talk to anybody.
Hed talk to anybody about anything.
And you learn so much just by talking to people.
But we ended up losing our restaurant during COVID, and it never opened back up.
We didn't have anywhere to eat or talk or anything.
There was nothing to do here in this town.
In the eastern plains of Colorado, these rural communities can be 20, 30, 40 miles apart, so when you live in a community and you don't have, say, a grocery store or a restaurant, you're not going to shop local or stay local, You're going to have to travel and go far away.
[trucks passing] I could see where my dad ended up with the idea about buying this place.
[gravel crunching] ‘Till he passed away two years ago.
And I don't remember what they were called, but each room had a different theme.
Nobody was doing anything to make it happen.
And so that, kind of, opened my mind: “Hey, what's my barrier here?” And, well, I guess there is none.
[laughs] It was April of my senior year is when I decided to buy the place.

The motel property, the restaurant property, the trailer, the whole block and parking area is The Bin LLC.
And that's what he bought that day.
[trucks passing] It was a family decision to get the restaurant remodeled and up and running.
And so I kind of oversaw all of that.
And, I named it the Kit Carson Café, because my dad would always say, “Let's go to the café!” “Let's meet at the café.” By having a restaurant within the community, Now people can stay and shop local and spend their money here.
And that just builds up the community.
It's really nice to get people coming through town that stop here and just want to know about how does somebody live in a small town of 220 people, you know, and it's just cool to get to teach people about our small town and small town living and how it works.
The school was the only real gathering place in our community until now.
Now we have another place, and it's huge.
If your dad were here to see this, what do you think he would think of of everything youve done so far?
Hed probably tell me I'm crazy.
But... but I think hed be proud of what we've done for the community.
